Ordination for Bhikkhu (Monk) of Dhammayut order

Upon arrival we first pay respect to the Upacaya (Preceptor) and congregation of about 12 or 13 monks.

Offering of flowers is presented to the Upacaya:

After which, the participants (who aspire to ordain as a monk) pay respect to parents/laypersons who would be offering the robes for ordination.
They would receive the robes with outstretched clasped hands as shown below:

They then turn to the Upacaya, placed the robes at their side and pay respect to the Upacaya by bowing down 3 times.

The robes is then taken up with clasped hands. The following is chanted by the participants:

After the chant, the Upacaya (Preceptor) would then instruct the basic knowledge of the Triple Gem, explaining how he can go for refuge and how he can benefit by being ordained. The Upacaya would tell the participant to commit to memory the 5 unattractive parts of the body for contemplation which is being recited in normal and reverse orders in which the participant would repeat after him word by word as follows:
In normal order:

The participant would then take off his white shirt and Upacaya would help to put on the Amsa (shoulder cloth) for the participant.


A monk would leave the assembly together with the participant to guide him on how to correctly wear the robes.
When the participants all completed, wearing the full monk robes, they would pay respect to the Upacaya.

The participants would then chant:

The participants then to turn to those who would like to offer the almsbowl to them. After the almsbowls have been received, the participants then turned to the Upacaya to request for ordination as monks by chanting:

EXAMINATION OF BOWLS AND ROBES
The following would be asked by the Acariya (teacher) and the participant’s reply as follows:

The participants then would pay respect and respectfully move backwards (still in kneeling position) before getting up and walking towards the back. Participant to take special care not to step on the special piece of cloth which is meant for the Acariya.
The participants then stand facing the assembly of monks.

Two Acariya would then pay respect and inform the monks that they would perform examination before leaving the assembly and heading towards the participants. They would then ask each participant (one by one) a series of questions in which the participant need to reply:

Upon completion of the above, both the Acariya would go back to the assembly to report to the Upacaya. Once the examination is accepted, the Acariya would gesture at the participants to go back to the assembly.
